It is our mission to provide the absolute best training and instruction to people of all ages, fitness, and skill levels.

The top priority at every location in the JGMMA Academy network is to provide the absolute best instruction in Mixed Martial Arts and Self-Defense techniques surrounding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Wrestling, and Boxing.

All the JGMMA Academies are now located throughout the greater Northern Cincinnati areas.

The Instructors at JGMMA

The depth of experience garnered by the JGMMA instructors will be a prominent advantage to anyone who seeks to learn the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or any of the programs offered at JGMMA. All of our classes are a fun, safe, and practical form of a full-body workout while learning highly effective self-defense skills that are applicable in a variety of real-world circumstances.

Jorge Gurgel

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Gurgel is originally from Fortaleza, Brazil, where he earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Marcus Aurélio. Gurgel starred in the second season of The Ultimate Fighter television series and was eliminated from the show in the fifth episode due to a loss to Jason Von Flue via unanimous decision, but showed tremendous heart by fighting with a blown ACL. Gurgel’s match with Diego Saraiva at UFC 73 was designated as the “Fight of the Night” by the UFC.

Gurgel has trained known fighters such as Rich Franklin, Justin Edwards, Zoila Frausto, Dustin Hazelett, Jason Butcher, and Sean Salmon.

David “Fluffy” Reeves

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Professor Dave “Fluffy” Reeves was awarded the rank of Black Belt under Leonardo “Dalla” Costa and was a member of the “Soldiers of Submission,” under well known Master Lloyd Irvin. Fluffy has been training and teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu along with Mixed Martial Arts for nearly 15 years. During these years of training and before Fluffy has competed in Brazil, Portugal, Italy and across the United States. In addition to instructing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai group classes, Fluffy also teaches law enforcement, military, and women’s defensive tactics classes.

As a seasoned competitor Fluffy pulls from this experience to assist in each students journey through martial arts. Known for his sense of humor, Fluffy brings both discipline and fairness to each of his classes while creating a fun environment.

Jake Nickoson

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Jake is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Jorge Gurgel. His discipline, dedication to the sport, and attention to detail has made Jake into a great coach.

Daniel "The mantis" McGuire

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Daniel "The mantis" McGuire from Hamilton, Ohio started wrestling in elementary and wrestled through high school. In 2007 started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai with team Jorge Gurgel. Dan has fought several amateur mma and kickboxing bouts and has competed in several regional and IBJJF Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments. Mantis brings passion to his training and his teaching keeping everyone motivated!

Brenton Petrey

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Brenton is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Jorge Gurgel.

Kameron Williams

Judo Black Belt - BJJ Brown Belt

Sensei Kameron began wrestling at a young age and did it for 10 years. While in high school, he also started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo. In 2012, he received his Judo black belt from Judo world champion, Frank Herzog. He also holds a brown belt in BJJ under Professor Jorge Gurgel.

Kameron is a multiple time American Grappling Challenge champion, Arnold Sports Festival Judo champion, and King of the Mat Kumite Super Fight champion.

Alannah K. Arnett

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt

Coach Alannah started her martial arts journey in 2000 when she started Tae Kwon do classes at an early age. After receiving her black belt in tae kwon do in 2005 she studied boxing and other arts until she decided to pursue MMA a few years later. In 2008, With MMA in mind, she started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is now a BJJ brown belt and active MMA fighter under Professor Dave Reeves and Professor Jorge Gurgel. When she is not competing in BJJ or MMA she enjoys coaching and sharing her 11+ years of training knowledge with the kids program at JG MMA.

Jay Wood

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt

Jay was a two time state champion wrestler in Nebraska and went on to wrestle for the University Nebraska at Omaha. After graduating, he began training for MMA, compiling a professional record of 7-2 with wins over UFC and Bellator vets. After taking a break from combat sports, he began his journey at JG training in the gi. Jay is a Masters World Runner Up in the Gi and Masters World Champion No-Gi at Purple Belt. He is also a coach for Mason Youth Wrestling and a Master Trainer at Life Time Fitness. He is currently a Brown Belt under Professor Jorge Gurgel and Professor David Reeves.

Derek Shepherd

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt

Coach Derek Shepherd was awarded the rank of brown belt by Jorge Gurgel in November 2019. His grappling experience started in middle school when he joined the wrestling team. He made the varsity wrestling team as a freshmen and continued through his junior year. Shortly after completing his associates degree, he began learning the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in late 2010 under Jorge Gurgel. Since that time frame he has become a seasoned competitor with countless hours of mat time along with 50+ competitions of experience.

Ravea Springs

Former WBO NABO Cruiser Weight Champion

Ravea Springs is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1979 as a 9-year-old amateur boxer through 2011 at the end of his professional career. Ravea Springs lost his first professional fight in 1993 at the age of 21 against Joseph Laryea after that loss Ravea Springs went on to win 19 fights in a row. Ravea Springs claimed his first belt World Boxing Organization NABO in 2002 at the age of 30. Springs against William Guthrie in Guthrie’s hometown of Saint Louis. Springs went on in 2003 to compete for the WBC World Cruiser Weight Title and loss to Wayne Braithwaite. In 2011 Springs compete for Universal Boxing Organization UBO Cruiser Weight Title and lost to Willie Herring. Ravea Springs professional boxing record is 28 wins and 4 losses.
